Key Symptoms: Intermittent claudication — pain, cramping, or fatigue in the legs or arms during activity that subsides with rest. Weakness or numbness in the affected limbs. Coldness or pallor in the extremities. Poor wound healing or ulcers on the toes, feet, or legs. Diminished or absent pulses in the affected limb. In advanced cases, pain may be present even at rest.

Diagnosis Path: Doppler ultrasound to assess blood flow and detect blockages. Segmental limb pressures and ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurements to compare blood pressure in limbs and detect arterial narrowing. Imaging studies such as angiography, which involves injecting contrast dye to visualize blood vessels and identify blockages or graft issues. Blood tests to evaluate risk factors like cholesterol and glucose levels.

Treatment Protocols: Lifestyle modifications: quitting smoking, adopting a heart-healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and engaging in supervised exercise programs. Medications: antiplatelet drugs to reduce clot formation, statins to lower cholesterol, blood pressure control medications, and medications to improve blood flow and relieve symptoms. Wound care: for ulcers or wounds, proper care is essential to prevent infection or deterioration. Interventional procedures: balloon angioplasty, stenting, or additional surgical bypass may be considered if blockages cause significant symptoms or threaten limb viability.
