Clinical Causes: Infections resulting from bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms entering the bone tissue Spread of infection from nearby tissues or skin through direct extension Trauma or injury that introduces infectious agents into the bone Repeated or chronic infections that have not been fully treated, leading to persistent inflammation Underlying health conditions that impair immune function, such as diabetes or immune deficiencies Previous surgical procedures involving the hand that may introduce bacteria

Key Symptoms: Persistent pain in the affected hand, often worsening over time Swelling and tenderness around the bones of the hand Redness and warmth in the skin overlying the affected area Reduced range of motion or stiffness in fingers or joints Possible presence of ulcers or open sores on the skin Fever or chills in some cases, indicating systemic infection Night sweats or malaise may also be observed

Diagnosis Path: A thorough physical examination of the hand, assessing swelling, tenderness, and range of motion Imaging studies such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to visualize bone destruction, inflammation, or sequestra Blood tests to detect infection markers like elevated white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP) Bone biopsy or tissue sampling to identify the causative microorganisms and confirm infection In some cases, scintigraphy (bone scan) may be utilized to detect areas of active bone inflammation

Treatment Protocols: Prolonged course of targeted antibiotics based on culture results, often administered intravenously initially Surgical debridement to remove dead or infected bone tissue and drain abscesses Management of pain with appropriate analgesics Immobilization of the affected hand to reduce movement and promote healing Supportive therapies such as physical therapy to maintain mobility and function In some cases, reconstructive surgery may be necessary if significant bone damage occurs
