Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period

This chapter applies to newborns and includes conditions that originate during pregnancy, labor, or immediately after birth. Even if diagnosed later, the condition must have originated in the perinatal period to be coded here. It includes disorders related to prematurity, low birth weight, birth trauma, neonatal respiratory distress, neonatal jaundice, and perinatal infections. It also captures conditions resulting from maternal complications that affect the newborn.
The chapter differentiates between respiratory, hematologic, metabolic, and neurologic conditions specific to neonates. Some codes describe effects of maternal factors such as maternal diabetes or hypertension on the infant. These codes are assigned to the infant’s record, not the mother’s. Accurate classification is essential for neonatal intensive care documentation, survival statistics, and long-term outcome studies in pediatric populations.
