Clinical Notes
The table below gives a classification of severity of visual impairment recommended by a WHO Study Group on the Prevention of Blindness, Geneva, 6-10 November 1972.~~The term 'low vision' in category H54 comprises categories 1 and 2 of the table, the term 'blindness' categories 3, 4 and 5, and the term 'unqualified visual loss' category 9.~~If the extent of the visual field is taken into account, patients with a field no greater than 10 but greater than 5 around central fixation should be placed in category 3 and patients with a field no greater than 5 around central fixation should be placed in category 4, even if the central acuity is not impaired.
Medical Intelligence & Overview
Legal blindness refers to a level of visual impairment as defined in the United States. It is characterized by specific criteria related to visual acuity and visual field, and is classified into different categories based on the severity of vision loss. This classification helps in understanding the extent of visual impairment and assists in medical and social services planning.
Causes & Symptoms
Clinical Causes: Age-related macular degeneration Glaucoma Diabetic retinopathy Retinal detachment Cataracts Corneal scars Optic nerve atrophy Inherited eye conditions Injuries to the eye or visual pathways Neurological disorders affecting vision
Key Symptoms: Significant reduction in visual acuity Severely limited or no peripheral vision Difficulty with everyday visual tasks such as reading or recognizing faces Visual field constriction Inability to see in low light conditions Dependence on other senses for navigation
Diagnostic & Treatment
Diagnosis Path: Diagnosis of legal blindness involves comprehensive eye examinations that measure visual acuity and evaluate the visual field. Tests such as the Snellen chart help determine the clarity of vision, while perimetry assesses the extent of the visual field. The classification considers both central acuity and the size of the visual field to determine the severity of impairment according to established guidelines.
Treatment Protocols: While some causes of severe visual impairment are irreversible, certain treatments and interventions may help prevent further deterioration or improve quality of life. These include medical management of underlying conditions, surgical procedures like cataract removal, vision therapy, and adaptive devices such as magnifiers and talking assistive technology. Rehabilitation services can also support individuals in maximizing their remaining vision and adapting to visual challenges.
