Clinical Causes: Trauma or injury to the foot, such as fractures or sprains Overuse or repetitive strain from activities like running or jumping Degenerative changes due to aging (osteoarthritis) Joint instability or abnormal foot mechanics Previous joint surgeries or treatments Inflammatory conditions affecting joints, such as rheumatoid arthritis Infections leading to cartilage damage Congenital abnormalities affecting foot structure

Key Symptoms: Persistent or intermittent pain in the affected foot joints Swelling and tenderness around the joint area Stiffness, especially after periods of inactivity Reduced range of motion or difficulty moving the toes or foot A feeling of grating or grinding when moving the joint (crepitus) Foot weakness or instability while walking Visible swelling or deformity in severe cases Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest

Diagnosis Path: clinical examination to evaluate joint tenderness, swelling, and range of motion; imaging studies such as X-rays to observe joint space narrowing, cartilage erosion, or deformities; and sometimes MRI scans for detailed visualization of cartilage health and surrounding soft tissues. Blood tests may also be conducted if inflammatory or infectious causes are suspected. Accurate diagnosis enables appropriate management and treatment planning.
