Clinical Causes: Autoimmune responses where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks muscle cells. Infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites that can trigger muscle inflammation. Drug-induced myositis resulting from reactions to specific medications, such as statins. Exposure to toxins or certain chemicals that can inflame muscle tissue. Underlying systemic diseases, including other autoimmune disorders or metabolic conditions. Physical stress or trauma to muscles leading to inflammatory responses.

Key Symptoms: Muscle weakness, particularly in the hips, shoulders, or neck. Muscle pain and tenderness, which can be persistent or worsening. Fatigue and decreased physical endurance. Swelling or inflammation in affected muscle groups. Difficulty with movements such as walking, climbing stairs, or lifting objects. In some cases, skin rashes or other systemic symptoms may be observed.

Diagnosis Path: • Physical examination to assess muscle strength and identify areas of tenderness or swelling. • Blood tests measuring muscle enzymes such as creatine kinase (CK) to detect muscle damage. • Electromyography (EMG) to evaluate electrical activity of the muscles. • Muscle biopsy to directly observe inflammation and muscle tissue abnormalities. • Imaging studies like MRI to visualize inflammation and damage in muscle tissues. • Additional tests to rule out other conditions or infections that might cause similar symptoms.

Treatment Protocols: • Corticosteroids to suppress immune system activity and decrease inflammation. • Immunosuppressive medications such as methotrexate or azathioprine for long-term control. • Physical therapy to help maintain muscle strength and improve mobility. • Pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs to manage discomfort. • Addressing underlying causes, such as stopping offending medications or treating infections. • Monitoring and adjusting treatment based on disease activity and response.
