The rerouted segment of bowel is not necessarily removed; it may simply be left in place while contents flow through the new pathway instead. This distinction matters clinically because bypassed segments can sometimes still cause problems, such as bacterial overgrowth, even though they are no longer part of the main digestive route. This proximity to critical structures makes duodenal bypass technically distinct from bypass elsewhere in the small bowel, and documentation should specify the duodenal origin and the jejunal or other destination used to reestablish the digestive pathway.
Approach: Open
Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure.
