Procedure Overview

Bypass procedures on the lower veins create a new pathway for blood to flow around a blocked or damaged section of a vein in the leg, pelvis, or abdomen. Superior Mesenteric Vein

The superior mesenteric vein drains the small intestine and proximal colon and unites with the splenic vein behind the pancreatic neck to form the portal vein, making it a critical junction in mesenteric venous drainage. It can be thrombosed by hypercoagulable states or compressed by pancreatic or peripancreatic tumors, producing bowel congestion, ischemia, or contributing to portal hypertension.
