Superior Vena Cava

The superior vena cava returns deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, and upper extremities to the right atrium, and bypass of this vessel is typically performed when it is obstructed by thrombosis, external tumor compression, or fibrosis, a constellation often referred to clinically as superior vena cava syndrome, or as part of complex congenital venous rerouting procedures like a bidirectional cavopulmonary connection.
