This code covers changing an external device fitted to the right foot, such as a post-op shoe, walking boot, or protective dressing used after forefoot surgery, fracture, or diabetic wound care. The foot's complex arch structure and weight-bearing role mean device fit directly affects gait, so a change may be prompted by wear, soiling, or the need for a different support level as healing progresses. Because plantar skin experiences constant pressure during standing and walking, devices covering the sole are inspected for even distribution of pressure at each change to avoid new ulceration, particularly in patients with reduced sensation. This code applies only to exchanging the external device, not to any incisional procedure performed on the foot.

Approach: External

External is the only approach value used in the Placement section, since every placement procedure, such as applying a cast, splint, packing, or pressure dressing, is performed on the skin or an accessible mucous membrane without penetrating instrumentation. It simply confirms that these body-alteration-free interventions occur entirely at or on the body surface, with no internal route to distinguish it from.
