Procedure Overview

This family covers computed tomography imaging of the venous system, in which a scanner rotates around the patient capturing many individual X-ray exposures that a computer reconstructs into detailed cross-sectional and three-dimensional images. Intracranial Sinuses

CT imaging of the intracranial sinuses evaluates the dural venous sinuses, including the superior sagittal, transverse, sigmoid, and cavernous sinuses, which collect venous blood from the brain and channel it toward the internal jugular veins. This study, typically performed as a CT venogram with intravenous contrast, is most often ordered to detect cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, a condition that can present with headache, seizure, or elevated intracranial pressure and is easily missed on non-contrast imaging. It also helps evaluate sinus involvement by adjacent mastoiditis, tumor, or trauma, and can identify normal anatomic variants such as sinus hypoplasia that might otherwise be mistaken for thrombosis. Because the dural sinuses run along fixed osseous grooves at the skull base and vertex, thin-section CT with appropriately timed contrast bolus is needed to distinguish a true filling defect from slow or turbulent flow.
