Portal and Splanchnic Veins
The portal and splanchnic veins encompass the portal vein along with its major tributaries, the splenic and superior mesenteric veins, which together drain blood from the stomach, intestines, spleen, and pancreas into the liver before systemic return. CT imaging of this venous network is central to evaluating portal vein thrombosis in cirrhotic or hypercoagulable patients, detecting tumor thrombus from hepatocellular carcinoma, and mapping venous anatomy before liver transplantation, portosystemic shunt procedures, or bariatric and pancreatic surgery. Because these vessels are grouped and coded as a single combined body part rather than imaged separately, the study is typically acquired during the portal venous phase, timed later than arterial imaging to allow adequate opacification of this lower-pressure, delayed-filling system.
Contrast: Other Contrast
Other Contrast captures imaging studies using a contrast medium that is neither high- nor low-osmolar iodinated agent, such as barium sulfate for gastrointestinal studies or gadolinium-based agents for certain applications outside standard MRI classification within this axis. It is used when the contrast administered does not fit the osmolarity-based iodinated categories, distinguishing it from those specific classes and from studies performed with no contrast.
