This family covers computed tomography imaging of the venous system, in which a scanner rotates around the patient capturing many individual X-ray exposures that a computer reconstructs into detailed cross-sectional and three-dimensional images. The left pulmonary vein, comprising superior and inferior branches, drains oxygenated blood from the left lung into the left atrium along a course situated posterior to the left main bronchus. CT evaluation of this vessel is commonly performed to assess pulmonary vein stenosis following catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, since the left veins are frequently targeted during such procedures, as well as to detect anomalous connections or extrinsic compression from adjacent mediastinal or lung masses. Because the left atrium sits close to the esophagus and descending aorta in this region, careful contrast-phase timing helps clearly delineate the venous lumen from surrounding structures, and laterality must be specified since findings often differ from the right side.
Contrast: Other Contrast
Other Contrast captures imaging studies using a contrast medium that is neither high- nor low-osmolar iodinated agent, such as barium sulfate for gastrointestinal studies or gadolinium-based agents for certain applications outside standard MRI classification within this axis. It is used when the contrast administered does not fit the osmolarity-based iodinated categories, distinguishing it from those specific classes and from studies performed with no contrast.
