Procedure Overview
Destruction procedures on the lower bones eliminate abnormal or diseased bone tissue in place, using heat, cold, chemical agents, or another destructive force, without cutting the tissue out and removing it from the body. A well-known example is radiofrequency or laser ablation of an osteoid osteoma in the femur or tibia, where a probe delivers energy directly into the lesion to destroy the nidus that causes the tumor's characteristic pain.
This approach is chosen when a lesion can be reached with a needle or probe and destroyed effectively without the larger incision and bone removal that an excisional procedure would require, often shortening recovery and preserving more of the surrounding healthy bone.

Coccyx
The coccyx is the small triangular bone at the caudal end of the spine, an attachment point for pelvic floor muscles and ligaments, and it can become a source of chronic pain, be affected by a small tumor, or harbor tissue implicated in a recurrent pilonidal process. Destruction of coccygeal bone tissue is accomplished in place, typically with thermal or laser energy, to eradicate abnormal or painful tissue without physically cutting the bone free or removing it, which would instead constitute a coccygectomy classified as excision or resection. Given the coccyx's proximity to the rectum, anal sphincter complex, and sacral nerve roots, the approach and depth of ablation are documented carefully, and this procedure is far less common than surgical coccygectomy for persistent coccydynia.
Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
