These procedures are often chosen for patients with limited liver function reserve or tumors positioned where removing surrounding healthy tissue would be too risky, and they can be performed percutaneously, laparoscopically, or during open surgery depending on tumor location and size.

Liver, Right Lobe

The right lobe of the liver is the larger of the two main hepatic lobes and a frequent site for metastatic deposits or primary hepatocellular carcinoma given its greater volume of parenchyma. When ablative destruction is directed specifically at a lesion confined to the right lobe, rather than the liver as a whole, the procedure is coded to this distinct body part to reflect the localized nature of the treatment. The right lobe's close relationship to the diaphragm, right kidney, and hepatic flexure of the colon means image guidance is used to avoid thermal injury to these adjacent structures during ablation.
