Procedure Overview
Destruction procedures on the muscles eliminate abnormal or unwanted tissue in place, using heat, cold, chemicals, or another destructive agent, rather than physically cutting the tissue out of the body. In muscle, this is applied less often than in skin or soft tissue, but it shows up in cases like ablation of an abnormal muscle lesion or destruction of a portion of muscle causing chronic pain or spasm.
The tissue is killed and left in the body, where it is absorbed or scarred over time rather than removed as a specimen. This makes Destruction useful when the target tissue is diffuse, hard to access surgically, or when the goal is functional, such as reducing muscle activity, rather than obtaining tissue for diagnosis.
Because nothing is sent to pathology in a pure destruction procedure, these cases are typically planned based on imaging or prior biopsy findings rather than intraoperative tissue analysis.
