Pancreatic Duct
The pancreatic duct, often called the duct of Wirsung, runs the length of the pancreas and carries digestive enzymes to the duodenum via the ampulla of Vater. Destruction within this duct is performed to eliminate abnormal tissue, such as an intraductal papillary lesion, using endoscopic or percutaneous energy application rather than resection of pancreatic parenchyma. Because the duct traverses the entire gland and varies in caliber along its course, the segment treated, whether head, body, or tail, should be identified in the record to reflect the extent and location of disease addressed.
