Lower Leg, Left

For the left lower leg, detachment is a below-knee amputation through the tibia and fibula, chosen whenever possible over a transfemoral level because retaining the knee joint substantially improves prosthetic function, gait efficiency, and energy cost of walking. Common indications include ischemic or diabetic tissue loss confined to the foot and distal leg, unsalvageable trauma, or infection that spares the proximal tibia and popliteal region. Surgeons commonly use a long posterior flap to provide durable soft tissue coverage over the beveled tibial end, and vessels and the tibial and common peroneal nerves are individually controlled.
