Bladder

The bladder can develop a contracted capacity or a stenotic segment from chronic inflammation, radiation cystitis, or long-term catheterization, and dilation in this context refers to stretching a narrowed outlet or contracted bladder wall region using a balloon or dilating catheter introduced cystoscopically. This is distinct from hydrodistension performed for diagnostic purposes, since the intent here is mechanical widening of a stenotic area to improve capacity or drainage. Because the bladder wall is elastic and can be overdistended, the pressure and duration of dilation are controlled to reduce the risk of mucosal tearing or rupture. This procedure is less common than ureteral or urethral dilation but may be used for bladder neck or trigonal narrowing, and documentation should specify the site and method to differentiate it from bladder neck-specific dilation coded separately.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
