Procedure Overview

Dilation procedures in the respiratory system widen a narrowed airway, most often the trachea or a bronchus, to restore normal airflow. A balloon catheter or similar device is guided to the narrowed segment, typically through a bronchoscope, and inflated to stretch the tissue open; in some cases a stent is left behind afterward to help hold the airway open, though the dilation itself is the act of expanding the passage.

This procedure is performed when scarring from prior intubation, surgery, radiation, or a tumor pressing on the airway has caused stenosis that makes breathing difficult. Widening the airway can relieve shortness of breath, reduce the work of breathing, and, in urgent cases, prevent complete airway obstruction.

Main Bronchus, Right

The right main bronchus is the shorter, more vertically oriented of the two primary airways branching from the trachea, carrying air to the entire right lung, and its relatively wide caliber and steep angle make it a common site for aspirated foreign material as well as for stenosis from tumor or granulation tissue. Dilation here relieves an obstructing narrowing using balloon or rigid bronchoscopic technique, restoring airflow to the right upper, middle, and lower lobes that all depend on this single conduit. Because obstruction proximal to the lobar branch points can collapse an entire lung, dilation of the right main bronchus is distinguished in documentation from dilation limited to one of its lobar branches, which affects only part of the lung.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.

Device: Intraluminal Device

Intraluminal Device denotes a single device, such as a stent or occlusion device, positioned within the lumen of a tubular body part like a vessel, duct, or airway to maintain patency or occlude flow. Commonly Confused With

Dilation is sometimes confused with Restriction, which narrows or partially closes a body part rather than opening it, and with Bypass, which reroutes contents around an obstruction rather than opening the existing pathway. The distinguishing factor is that Dilation works within the native lumen to make it wider, without creating a new route or narrowing anything.
