Procedure Overview

Dilation procedures in the respiratory system widen a narrowed airway, most often the trachea or a bronchus, to restore normal airflow. A balloon catheter or similar device is guided to the narrowed segment, typically through a bronchoscope, and inflated to stretch the tissue open; in some cases a stent is left behind afterward to help hold the airway open, though the dilation itself is the act of expanding the passage.

This procedure is performed when scarring from prior intubation, surgery, radiation, or a tumor pressing on the airway has caused stenosis that makes breathing difficult. Widening the airway can relieve shortness of breath, reduce the work of breathing, and, in urgent cases, prevent complete airway obstruction.

Trachea

The trachea is the cartilage-ringed airway connecting the larynx to the main bronchi, and dilation of this structure addresses tracheal stenosis arising from prolonged intubation, tracheostomy scarring, prior surgery, or inflammatory disease. The procedure widens a narrowed segment using balloon dilation or rigid bronchoscopic dilators, often performed under direct visualization with a rigid or flexible bronchoscope, and may be paired with stent placement to maintain patency afterward, though the dilation itself is coded separately from any device insertion. Because a critically narrowed trachea threatens the entire airway rather than a single lobe, tracheal dilation is frequently urgent and is documented with attention to the exact segment treated and whether the case was diagnostic bronchoscopy converted to therapeutic dilation.

Approach: Percutaneous

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope. It differs from Open in that the site itself is never exposed, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic in that no endoscope is used to see internal structures. Common examples include needle biopsies and injections.

Device: Intraluminal Device
