Because nothing is removed, the ligament or bursa remains in the body, just cut through so its two ends separate or its restrictive effect is eliminated. Surgeons choose this approach when the structure itself is not diseased but is mechanically causing a problem, such as nerve entrapment or joint stiffness.
Recovery generally focuses on restoring motion and function once the compressive or restrictive tissue has been released, and many division procedures are done through small incisions or endoscopically.
