Procedure Overview
Drainage procedures on the upper bones remove fluid or gas, most often pus from an infected area, through incision, needle aspiration, or placement of a drain. This applies to bones such as the sternum, ribs, clavicle, scapula, humerus, and the bones of the forearm and hand when an abscess forms within or around the bone, commonly as a result of osteomyelitis or a post-surgical infection at a sternotomy or fracture site.
The goal is to relieve pressure, reduce bacterial load, and allow antibiotics to work more effectively, sometimes as an urgent measure to prevent the infection from spreading into the bloodstream or an adjacent joint. A drain may be left in place temporarily so fluid continues to exit as the area heals.

Cervical Vertebra
The cervical vertebrae, the seven small bones supporting the neck and protecting the upper spinal cord, are drained when infection - such as vertebral osteomyelitis or a paraspinal abscess extending into bone - or a postoperative hematoma threatens the adjacent cord and nerve roots. Given the proximity of the vertebral arteries, esophagus, and airway, drainage in this region is approached with particular caution, often through an anterior or posterior route depending on where the collection sits relative to the vertebral body or posterior elements. Because neurologic compromise can develop quickly if pressure builds near the cord, drainage here is frequently urgent rather than elective. Approach: Percutaneous
Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope. It differs from Open in that the site itself is never exposed, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic in that no endoscope is used to see internal structures.
