Choroid, Right

The choroid is the vascular, pigmented layer between the sclera and retina of the right eye, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the outer retinal layers and highly susceptible to fluid or blood accumulation because of its dense vascularity. Drainage of this structure most often addresses a choroidal hemorrhage or serous choroidal detachment, conditions that can follow ocular surgery, trauma, or a sudden drop in intraocular pressure, and that risk permanent vision loss if the buildup compresses adjacent retinal tissue. Because the choroid lies deep to the sclera, access usually requires a scleral incision or existing sclerotomy to reach and evacuate the suprachoroidal space. Precise documentation of the surgical approach and any device left for continued egress is important, since choroidal drainage is frequently performed urgently alongside other retinal or vitreous procedures.

Approach: Percutaneous

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope. It differs from Open in that the site itself is never exposed, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic in that no endoscope is used to see internal structures. Common examples include needle biopsies and injections.
