Drainage procedures in the respiratory system remove fluid, air, blood, or pus that has built up somewhere it doesn't belong, most often the pleural space between the lung and chest wall, but also within the lung tissue, bronchi, or trachea. A collapsed lung from trapped air (pneumothorax), an infected fluid collection (empyema), a malignant pleural effusion, or a lung abscess are all situations where drainage restores normal breathing mechanics and relieves pressure that would otherwise compress the lung.

The left lower lobe bronchus continues in a nearly straight line from the left main bronchus after the upper lobe branch departs, positioning it to collect gravity-dependent secretions, aspirated contents, and blood much like its right-sided counterpart. Drainage here is indicated for basal segment infections, lung abscess, or hemoptysis localized to the lower portion of the left lung, conditions often seen in patients with prolonged recumbency or impaired airway clearance. Its posterior and inferior orientation means bronchoscopic access typically requires similar positioning adjustments to those used on the right lower lobe. Because the left lower lobe lacks a middle lobe buffer between it and the upper lobe, pathology here can sometimes be harder to distinguish radiographically from lingular disease, making precise documentation of the lower lobe bronchus important for accurate procedural records.

Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic describes instrumentation introduced through a natural orifice or a surgically created opening while using an endoscope for visualization, as in a routine colonoscopy performed through the anus. It differs from the plain Via Natural or Artificial Opening value by the added scope, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic by using an existing passage rather than a new skin puncture.
