Procedure Overview

Drainage procedures in the respiratory system remove fluid, air, blood, or pus that has built up somewhere it doesn't belong, most often the pleural space between the lung and chest wall, but also within the lung tissue, bronchi, or trachea. A collapsed lung from trapped air (pneumothorax), an infected fluid collection (empyema), a malignant pleural effusion, or a lung abscess are all situations where drainage restores normal breathing mechanics and relieves pressure that would otherwise compress the lung.

Middle Lung Lobe, Right

The middle lobe of the right lung is the smallest of the three right lobes and sits between the horizontal and oblique fissures, a position that predisposes it to poor collateral ventilation and chronic low-grade infection. Drainage of this lobe addresses parenchymal abscess, empyema pockets, or loculated effusion adjacent to it, distinct from clearing its bronchus of secretions. Its compact size and close relationship to the pericardium and right heart border mean image-guided catheter placement requires attention to avoid cardiac structures. Middle lobe syndrome, in which chronic collapse leads to recurrent infection, is a frequent indication for drainage procedures targeting this specific lobe. Because it has no counterpart on the left, precise identification of this lobe in documentation is important to distinguish it from lingular or lower lobe involvement.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.

Drainage Device denotes a device such as a tube or catheter left in place to remove fluid, blood, or air from a body part or cavity following a procedure. It is distinguished from Monitoring Device, which senses and records physiologic data rather than evacuating substances from the body.
