Its protected, deep location means it is less commonly injured in trauma and often serves as a critical collateral pathway when the tibial arteries are diseased or occluded, making its preservation a priority in vascular planning. Drainage procedures in this region typically address deep compartment hematomas or infected collections that develop after fibular fracture fixation, free fibular flap harvest, or vascular surgery nearby. Because the vessel sits deep to major muscle groups, reaching a fluid collection near it often requires a more extensive dissection than for the more superficial tibial arteries.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
