The surgeon opens or punctures the area next to the nerve and lets the fluid escape, either through a needle and syringe or an incision, sometimes leaving a temporary tube in place so drainage continues over several days. Because peripheral nerves have little room to swell before they are damaged, timing often matters more here than in many other body systems.

Thoracic Sympathetic Nerve

The thoracic sympathetic chain lies along the paravertebral gutters just anterior to the rib heads within the chest, a location where fluid collections may arise after thoracic spine surgery, thoracic trauma, or sympathectomy procedures. Drainage here is technically challenging due to the chain's proximity to the pleura, great vessels, and vertebral bodies, often requiring thoracoscopic or image-guided access rather than a simple open approach. Because irritation or compression of this chain can produce abnormal sweating patterns or neuropathic chest pain, timely evacuation of the collection is clinically relevant to preventing prolonged sympathetic dysfunction. Documentation should specify the thoracic level and whether a minimally invasive thoracoscopic technique was used, given the chain's deep intrathoracic position.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
