Procedure Overview
Drainage procedures remove fluid, pus, blood, or air that has accumulated abnormally in a mouth or throat structure, most commonly to treat an abscess, hematoma, or infected space that is causing pain, swelling, or airway compromise. A common example is incision and drainage of a peritonsillar abscess, where a collection of pus beside the tonsil is opened and evacuated to relieve pressure and clear the infection.
This procedure is usually performed urgently when a fluid collection is causing significant symptoms or risking further spread of infection, and it can be done with a simple needle aspiration or a small incision depending on the size and location of the collection.

The left vocal cord functions alongside its right-sided counterpart to approximate during phonation, and it too is susceptible to hematoma or abscess formation from trauma, phonotrauma, or iatrogenic injury during intubation. Draining a collection from the left cord relieves the mass effect that can impair vibratory function and cause hoarseness or breathiness, and if left unaddressed, an organized hematoma may evolve into a persistent polyp. As with the contralateral side, this procedure is performed endoscopically using fine instruments to avoid further trauma to the delicate mucosal cover and underlying vocalis muscle. Accurate laterality documentation is essential, since ICD-10-PCS distinguishes the left vocal cord as a separate body part from the right, affecting both code selection and clinical tracking of the affected side.
Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
