A surgeon typically makes a small incision over the affected vein, isolates the segment, and removes it while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. Excised tissue may also be sent for biopsy when the reason for removal is to evaluate a suspicious growth or mass involving the vein wall.

External Jugular Vein, Right

The right external jugular vein runs superficially across the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck, draining the scalp and superficial face before emptying into the subclavian vein. Care is still taken near the greater auricular nerve and other cutaneous branches that cross its path superficially. Since it serves as a secondary rather than primary drainage route for the head and neck, excising a segment generally has limited impact on overall venous return.

Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic

Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is distinguished from plain Percutaneous by the presence of scope-guided visualization, and from Via Natural or Artificial Opening Endoscopic by its route being a new puncture rather than an existing orifice or stoma.
