Common reasons include removing a suspicious conjunctival lesion, trimming a pterygium, or taking a biopsy sample from the eyelid margin.
Because only part of the body part is taken, the eye retains its overall structure afterward. Recovery is typically brief, with topical antibiotics or steroid drops used to control inflammation, and follow-up focused on wound healing and pathology results if a biopsy was involved.

The right lens is the transparent, biconvex structure suspended behind the iris by zonular fibers that fine-tunes focus through accommodation, and it becomes the target of excision when it is removed without replacement by an intraocular lens.
