Lower Jaw

The lower jaw, or mandible, is the single mobile bone of the facial skeleton, housing the lower teeth and forming the chin and jaw angle, and it is subject to excision for ameloblastomas, odontogenic keratocysts, osteomyelitis, or squamous cell carcinoma extending from the oral mucosa. Because the mandible carries the inferior alveolar nerve within its body and anchors muscles of mastication, excising a portion of it requires careful attention to nerve preservation and to whether continuity of the bone is maintained or a segment is removed outright.
