Excision procedures on the upper arteries involve cutting out a portion of an artery in the chest, neck, shoulder, or arm without replacing the tissue removed. Patients undergo this procedure to address localized disease, obtain a biopsy sample, or clear away scarred or narrowed sections that are interfering with blood flow to the arms, neck, or brain.

Ulnar Artery, Right

The right ulnar artery is one of the two terminal branches of the brachial artery, running down the medial forearm to join the superficial palmar arch and supply much of the hand, and it is particularly known for hypothenar hammer syndrome, where repetitive blunt trauma to the heel of the hand causes aneurysmal degeneration or thrombosis. Excision of an affected segment addresses this aneurysm, a traumatic injury, or an embolic source, and because the ulnar artery is a major contributor to hand perfusion via the palmar arches, surgeons often assess collateral flow through the radial artery beforehand. Documentation should note the exact forearm level involved, since more distal excisions near the wrist carry different risk to digital perfusion than proximal ones.

Approach: Open

Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.

ExtirpationExtirpation is the family most often mixed up with Excision here, since both remove material from the artery, but Extirpation applies specifically to abnormal solid matter such as thrombus, embolus, or plaque rather than a portion of the vessel wall itself.
ResectionResection is similarly close but applies when an entire named arterial segment or branch is cut out rather than only part of it.
