Vocal Cord, Right
The right vocal cord is one of the paired folds of mucosa and muscle within the larynx that vibrate to produce voice and that close together to protect the airway during swallowing. Excision of tissue from the right vocal cord is performed for lesions such as polyps, nodules, papillomas, leukoplakia, or early carcinoma confined to this fold, typically approached endoscopically using microlaryngoscopy instruments or a laser. Because the vocal cord's mucosal cover and underlying lamina propria must vibrate freely for normal voice quality, even a small excision can alter phonation if it disrupts this layered structure, so surgeons aim to remove only the diseased tissue while preserving as much of the normal cover as possible. Laterality is clinically significant here, since documenting the right side distinguishes the procedure from an analogous left-sided excision.
Approach: Open
Open approach means the surgeon cuts through skin, mucous membrane, or other tissue layers to physically expose the target site to view before performing the procedure. It gives direct visualization and hands-on access, distinguishing it from Percutaneous approaches where instruments pass through a small puncture without exposing the site. Open is typical for procedures needing wide access, such as most laparotomies.
