Procedure Overview

Extirpation of the eye refers to the removal of solid matter, such as a foreign body, blood clot, or abnormal deposit, that does not belong in the eye but is not itself a piece of the eye's own tissue. This differs from cutting out a portion of an organ; instead, the surgeon is clearing out material that has become lodged or has accumulated, like a metallic fragment embedded in the cornea after an injury or a thrombus within an ocular vessel.

This type of procedure is often performed urgently, particularly for foreign body removal following trauma, since retained material can scar the cornea, trigger infection, or threaten vision if left in place. Other situations include clearing calcified deposits or removing a dislocated lens fragment that has become trapped within the eye.

Lacrimal Gland, Right

The right lacrimal gland sits in the superolateral orbit and produces the aqueous component of the tear film, draining through several small ducts into the superior conjunctival fornix. Extirpation of this gland addresses solid abnormal material lodged within its ductal or glandular tissue, such as calculi, inspissated secretions, or necrotic debris from chronic dacryoadenitis, rather than removing the gland itself. Because the gland lies close to the lateral orbital rim and the levator muscle, the surgical approach requires care to avoid disrupting tear secretion capacity or orbital structures during removal of the impacted material. Since the lacrimal gland's main function is tear production, any manipulation carries a risk of altering baseline tear output, and documentation should specify whether the palpebral or orbital lobe was accessed.

Approach: Percutaneous

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope. It differs from Open in that the site itself is never exposed, and from Percutaneous Endoscopic in that no endoscope is used to see internal structures.
