Procedure Overview
Extraction in the urinary system describes pulling or stripping material out using mechanical force, most commonly the manual removal of a stone with a basket or forceps passed through a ureteroscope or cystoscope. Unlike simply draining fluid or lifting out loose debris, extraction implies actively gripping and pulling the material free, often against some resistance from surrounding tissue.

The right kidney filters blood to form urine and is enclosed within Gerota's fascia in the retroperitoneum beneath the liver. Extraction from the right kidney refers to pulling out matter, most typically obtaining a core or wedge of renal parenchyma for diagnostic tissue sampling via percutaneous or open renal biopsy, distinguishing it from extirpation of abnormal solid material like stones. Renal biopsy is performed to evaluate unexplained proteinuria, hematuria, unexplained renal dysfunction, suspected rejection in a transplanted kidney, or to characterize a mass, and image guidance with ultrasound or CT is standard to reduce bleeding risk given the kidney's rich vascularity.
