Procedure Overview

Dialysis Shunt/Fistula
Fluoroscopic venography of a dialysis shunt or fistula images a surgically created arteriovenous connection, most often in the forearm or upper arm, that has been matured for hemodialysis access, evaluating the entire circuit from the arterial anastomosis through the outflow vein to the central veins. This study is performed when access dysfunction is suspected, such as poor flow, difficult cannulation, elevated venous pressures during dialysis, or a palpable stenosis, and it frequently accompanies balloon angioplasty performed in the same session to treat any lesion identified. Contrast is injected directly into the access, sometimes with temporary occlusion of the outflow to pressurize the fistula and better opacify the anastomosis, while fluoroscopy documents stenosis, thrombus, or aneurysmal dilation along the circuit. Because these accesses are subject to recurrent stenosis from intimal hyperplasia, serial studies over the life of the access are common and are best interpreted in comparison with prior imaging.
Contrast: Other Contrast
Other Contrast captures imaging studies using a contrast medium that is neither high- nor low-osmolar iodinated agent, such as barium sulfate for gastrointestinal studies or gadolinium-based agents for certain applications outside standard MRI classification within this axis. It is used when the contrast administered does not fit the osmolarity-based iodinated categories, distinguishing it from those specific classes and from studies performed with no contrast.
