Esophagus
The esophagus is a muscular conduit running from the pharynx to the stomach, and fluoroscopic study of it typically involves a barium swallow performed under real-time x-ray guidance so the radiologist can watch the contrast column move through each segment. Because swallowing is a dynamic act, still images alone cannot capture the peristaltic wave, the timing of the upper and lower esophageal sphincters, or transient narrowing that only appears mid-swallow. The moving images help identify strictures, webs, rings, diverticula, motility disturbances, and reflux of contrast back from the stomach. Positioning the patient in multiple projections, including prone oblique views, allows the full length of the esophagus to be traced from the cervical region through the gastroesophageal junction, which is documented as the imaged body part.

Coders should look for documentation confirming the study was performed under continuous fluoroscopic observation with contrast administration, such as an upper GI series, small bowel follow-through, or barium enema, along with the specific segment of the digestive tract examined.
