Procedure Overview

Fluoroscopic venography of this vessel is performed with contrast injected through a catheter or peripheral line, commonly to evaluate suspected thrombosis related to central venous catheter placement, to assess stenosis before dialysis access planning, or to guide device insertion such as pacemaker leads. Because the right internal jugular is the preferred route for many central venous procedures, imaging it also serves a practical procedural role in confirming vessel patency and catheter tip position. Findings are recorded as unilateral to the right side, distinguishing them from left-sided or bilateral jugular studies performed in the same encounter.

Contrast: Low Osmolar

Low Osmolar denotes use of a low-osmolar iodinated contrast agent during an imaging study, the class most commonly used in modern radiographic and CT imaging because it better approximates the osmolality of blood and carries a lower risk of reaction than High Osmolar media. This value distinguishes studies performed with this now-standard contrast type from those using older high-osmolar agents or no contrast at all.
