Procedure Overview

Fluoroscopic venography of the left pulmonary vein evaluates the vessels draining the left lung into the left atrium, most commonly performed to define ostial anatomy before atrial fibrillation ablation or to check for stenosis developing after a prior ablation, a complication to which the left veins are not immune given their proximity to the ablation lesion set. Anomalous connections and variant confluences, including a common left ostium formed by the superior and inferior veins, are also assessed. A transseptal approach allows catheter access to the left atrium, from which contrast is injected while fluoroscopy documents the vein's course, caliber, and drainage pattern. Because the left atrial appendage lies close to the left pulmonary veins, imaging is interpreted with attention to this adjacent structure when planning intervention nearby.

Contrast: Other Contrast

Other Contrast captures imaging studies using a contrast medium that is neither high- nor low-osmolar iodinated agent, such as barium sulfate for gastrointestinal studies or gadolinium-based agents for certain applications outside standard MRI classification within this axis. It is used when the contrast administered does not fit the osmolarity-based iodinated categories, distinguishing it from those specific classes and from studies performed with no contrast.
