This study is performed to evaluate suspected renal vein thrombosis, tumor thrombus extension from renal cell carcinoma, nutcracker-type compression, or to map anatomy before venous sampling or intervention. The catheter is typically advanced from a femoral venous approach into the vena cava and selectively into the renal vein ostium, with contrast injected under fluoroscopic observation to outline the vein's caliber and any filling defects. Because the right renal vein's short course affords less room for catheter stability, care is taken during selective cannulation, and findings are recorded with attention to the vein's junction with the cava.
