A common example is placing a temporary antibiotic spacer in a joint during a staged infection treatment, or inserting hardware to stabilize a joint as an isolated procedure separate from any other repair. These devices are typically intended to remain in the body for a period of treatment or, in some cases, permanently, and the procedure itself does not involve cutting out or repairing the underlying joint tissue.

Temporomandibular Joint, Right

The right temporomandibular joint is a small, mobile synovial joint pairing the mandibular condyle with the temporal bone's articular fossa, separated by a fibrocartilaginous disc that allows both hinge and gliding motion during chewing and speech. Insertion procedures here involve placing a device, such as an interpositional spacer, drug-eluting implant, or arthroscopic instrumentation left temporarily in place, without removing or replacing the joint's own tissue. A frequent mistake is coding routine fixation hardware placed during a fracture repair or fusion as a separate Insertion procedure, when it should instead be captured within the device qualifier of the primary root operation rather than coded again independently.
