Procedure Overview

Magnetic resonance imaging of the non-axial lower bones covers the femur, tibia, fibula, patella, and the bones of the ankle and foot, excluding the spine, pelvis, and skull. A scanner uses a strong magnet and radio waves to build detailed cross-sectional pictures of bone, marrow, cartilage, and the surrounding soft tissue without any radiation exposure.
