Occlusion procedures in the lower veins permanently close off a vessel so blood can no longer flow through it. This is most often used to treat varicose veins, where a diseased or refluxing segment of the great or small saphenous vein is sealed shut, redirecting blood into healthier veins nearby. Occlusion on this side is most often performed for control of postpartum or post-surgical pelvic hemorrhage, a pelvic arteriovenous malformation, or to reduce venous inflow to a pelvic tumor, and the proximity to bowel and ureteral structures requires precise imaging localization before device deployment. The extensive collateralization of this plexus across the pelvis generally allows the vessel to be sacrificed without significant venous congestion, which is part of why it is favored for embolization rather than open repair.
Approach: Percutaneous Endoscopic
Percutaneous Endoscopic combines a puncture through skin or mucous membrane with insertion of an endoscope to visualize the procedure internally, as in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
