The left upper lobe bronchus is anatomically distinctive because the left lung lacks a separate middle lobe; instead this bronchus gives off a lingular branch in addition to the segments supplying the true upper lobe. Occlusion here is generally reserved for lobar-confined hemoptysis, a persistent air leak localized to the lobe, or staged management of a bronchopleural fistula where resection is not yet appropriate. Because the lingular takeoff is close to the main bifurcation, the position of the occluding device relative to that branch point determines whether lingular ventilation is preserved or sacrificed along with the rest of the lobe, a distinction that matters for both technique and outcome.

Percutaneous describes entry by needle or instrument puncture through the skin or mucous membrane to reach the site of the procedure, without cutting the tissue open or using a visualizing scope.
