Packing refers to placing gauze, sponges, or similar material into a natural body opening, most often the nose, vagina, or rectum, to control bleeding, apply pressure, or support tissue while it heals. Anterior or posterior nasal packing after a nosebleed that won't stop with simple pressure is a common example, as is vaginal packing after childbirth or gynecologic surgery, or rectal packing following certain colorectal procedures.
