Procedure Overview

The hepatic artery, typically arising from the celiac trunk, supplies oxygenated blood to the liver parenchyma, biliary tree, and gallbladder, and plain radiographic imaging of this vessel is used to delineate its caliber and anatomic course, which is notably variable across individuals with replaced or accessory branches being common. This variability makes documentation of the specific hepatic arterial anatomy clinically important before procedures such as transplantation, resection, or transarterial chemoembolization for liver tumors. Radiographic evaluation may reveal aneurysm, stenosis, or occlusion affecting hepatic perfusion, and because the artery is deep and surrounded by other celiac branches, catheter positioning and contrast timing are critical to obtaining a clear, unobscured image of the vessel itself.

Contrast: Other Contrast

Other Contrast captures imaging studies using a contrast medium that is neither high- nor low-osmolar iodinated agent, such as barium sulfate for gastrointestinal studies or gadolinium-based agents for certain applications outside standard MRI classification within this axis. It is used when the contrast administered does not fit the osmolarity-based iodinated categories, distinguishing it from those specific classes and from studies performed with no contrast.

The closest source of confusion is fluoroscopy of the lower arteries, since both may use contrast and produce still images for the chart, but fluoroscopy involves continuous real-time viewing during the procedure while plain radiography captures a single exposure. It is also distinct from CT of the same arteries, which reconstructs cross-sectional data from many exposures rather than producing one planar image, and from ultrasonography, which uses sound rather than radiation entirely.
