Plain radiography of the eye is a conventional x-ray examination of the orbit and surrounding bony structures, most often ordered to look for a radiopaque foreign body lodged in or around the eye. A single or limited series of external x-ray exposures is captured on a photographic or digital plate, producing a flat image that shows dense materials, such as metal, glass, or certain plastics, in sharp contrast to the surrounding soft tissue.
This study is typically requested in emergency settings after trauma involving metalwork, grinding, or an explosion, particularly before an MRI is considered, since a metallic foreign body near the eye can be dangerous once the patient enters a strong magnetic field. It is a fast screening tool rather than a detailed diagnostic study of the eye's internal structures, which are better evaluated with ultrasound, CT, or a slit-lamp examination.
The orbit's thin bones and the eye's soft, fluid-filled structures do not show up with the same detail as denser objects, so a negative plain film does not fully exclude a small or radiolucent foreign body.

The right lacrimal duct, more precisely the nasolacrimal drainage system, channels tears from the lacrimal sac at the medial canthus down into the nasal cavity beneath the inferior turbinate. Contrast: Other Contrast
Other Contrast captures imaging studies using a contrast medium that is neither high- nor low-osmolar iodinated agent, such as barium sulfate for gastrointestinal studies or gadolinium-based agents for certain applications outside standard MRI classification within this axis. It is used when the contrast administered does not fit the osmolarity-based iodinated categories, distinguishing it from those specific classes and from studies performed with no contrast.
