These X-rays are ordered after trauma to check for spinal or rib fractures, for patients with chronic back pain to look for degenerative changes such as disc space narrowing or arthritis, and to monitor conditions like scoliosis over time. Because the images are quick to obtain and inexpensive compared with other imaging methods, they are usually the first study performed before more advanced imaging is considered.
Patients typically stand or lie on a table while a technologist positions the X-ray equipment, and multiple views from different angles are commonly taken to give a fuller picture of the area in question.
