The right pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the right lung, branching extensively to follow the bronchial tree into the lobes and segments of that lung. Radiographic imaging of this vessel, performed with contrast, is used to evaluate pulmonary embolism, congenital anomalies such as pulmonary artery sling or branch stenosis, and vascular changes associated with pulmonary hypertension or prior cardiac surgery. Because the right pulmonary artery has a longer intrapericardial course than the left before it reaches the lung, it is often the preferred site for catheter measurements of pulmonary artery pressure and for selective angiography in suspected right-sided embolic disease. Its close anatomic relationship to the superior vena cava and right atrium is also relevant when interpreting studies performed via right heart catheterization.

Contrast: Low Osmolar

Low Osmolar denotes use of a low-osmolar iodinated contrast agent during an imaging study, the class most commonly used in modern radiographic and CT imaging because it better approximates the osmolality of blood and carries a lower risk of reaction than High Osmolar media. This value distinguishes studies performed with this now-standard contrast type from those using older high-osmolar agents or no contrast at all.
